ECI to announce assembly election schedules for Nagaland, Tripura, and Meghalaya

The Election Commission of India is set to announce the schedule for the assembly elections, which is to be held in Nagaland, Tripura, and Meghalaya.

New Delhi: On 18th January 2023, Wednesday afternoon, Election Commission officials will announce the dates and times of the assembly elections to be held in the states of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.

The poll panel will hold a press conference at 2.30 p.m. in the national capital for the purpose of the election. It is important to note that the terms of the three assemblies are coming to an end on different dates in March, Check all Important Details Below.

  • Total seats: 60
  • Majority mark: 31 seats
  • Current tenure: 23 March, 2018 – 22 March, 2023
  • Current CM: Manik Saha (Bharatiya Janata Party)

The tenure of Tripura’s chief ministers

A total of eleven chief ministers have served as chief ministers of Tripura since 1963. It was Sachindra Lal Singh of the Indian National Congress who was the first. During his reign as chief minister of Tripura, Manik Sarkar, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), was the longest chief minister in the history of the state. He served from 1998 to 2018. Manik Saha is currently holding the position after Biplab Kumar Deb resigned from the position earlier this year.

The tenures of Meghalaya’s chief ministers

A total of 12 chief ministers have served Meghalaya since Williamson A. Sangma entered office in 1970 and are members of the National People’s Party. Currently, the state is led by Conrad Sangma, a member of the National People’s Party who is serving as the chief minister. A total of six of these chief ministers are members of the Indian National Congress party. In his eight years in office, Mukul Sangma has been the longest-serving chief minister in the history of the state. During the last two years, Meghalaya has been governed by the president for only two brief periods of time. Historically, the main political party that has governed the country has been the All Party Hill Leaders Conference.

Nagaland chief ministers and their tenure

There have been 24 chief ministers in Nagaland since 1963, starting with P. Shilu Ao, who took oath in 1963, until the current chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, who took oath in 2018 and is the representative of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party. Four out of these chief ministers are members of the Indian National Congress party.

2023 is going to be a crucial year due to the fact that assembly elections are due in nine states during this year. Aside from the four northeastern states of Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Mizoram, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana will also take part in the elections in 2023, and the winner’s tenure will last for five years after the elections.
